Manitoba Water Stewardship is working towards developing a predictive model that will provide an early warning of when E. coli densities are likely to be elevated at Lake Winnipeg Beaches.
Similar to the last three years, weather and lake level information appear to be good predictors of bacteria counts. When strong winds from the north cause short-term increases in water levels, bacteria counts tend to be higher.
Based on experience from previous years, as water levels drop and favourable weather returns (sunny and calm winds), bacteria counts typically fall quickly.
