RM of Gimli Public message: COVID-19 May 28, 2021

As the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps across Manitoba, Council wants to remind the RM of Gimli to stay safe, to be good neighbours and community members by diligently following public health orders, and to make sure to care not only for each other but for yourselves as well.

Council was incredibly proud to see that a recent Winnipeg Free Press graphic showed that Gimli had the highest COVID-19 vaccination uptake in the province among non-Northern communities, with just shy of 70% of eligible people having received at least their first dose. With the Vaccine Super Site opening on May 29th at the Gimli Recreation Centre, we encourage all eligible people to book their first and second doses as soon as possible in order to protect themselves, their community, and our health care system as a whole.

Council has continued to work with public health officials to enact and enforce public health orders within the RM of Gimli for the safety of our citizens and visitors. Our administration across all departments continue to adapt to new measures to ensure no lapse in critical services.  Our Bylaw Enforcement Officer continues to monitor and enforce restrictions in public spaces, and we are in the process of hiring additional security staff as we approach the busy summer months for the beach and downtown areas. In anticipation of a similar uptick in visitors that we saw last year, we also have plans in place for additional refuse collection and Porta Pottie sanitation on weekends utilizing Public Works, Recreation, and Beach Patrol staff.

Lastly, understanding that the pandemic has led to unfortunate and, in some cases, dire circumstances for many in our community, we encourage anyone with the means to do so to consider donating to local charities that help those in times of need, such as Evergreen Basic Needs, the Gimli District Health Auxiliary, the Interlake Women’s Resource Centre, and the Gimli Seniors Resource Council.
